Celebrating 45 years of commitment and service to our Community
Anna Maria Island Community Center Board of Directors announce
2005 Report Card to the Community: A+
21st Century Learning Center: A+ - Annual Report Message - 2003-2004 Audit
Thanks to the generosity of individual donors the “Give Where You Live” building campaign is on target with 80% of the required funding secured.
- Building project fund reaches $2 million in gifts and pledges.
- The Center will stay in Anna Maria with the lease secured for the next 96 years
Annual Audit: A+
The Center is a federal 501©(3) not for profit agency. By law, all financial records are available for review and monitored by a community based Board of Directors.
- $.90 of every dollar raised goes directly back into the programs and services, according to the audit firm of Kerkering Barberio & Co.
- Center Treasurer, Tom Breiter commented that the finances of the Center are managed in a fiduciary manner; the board reviews monthly financial statements;
the Center is audited annually and has received excellent audit reports for the past 15 years.
Financial Status: A+
The Center, like many families on the Island…. lives on a very tight budget saving every dollar that is raised over budget for the building fund. Center’s CEO, Pierrette Kelly is responsible for all aspects of the Center’s operation including finding funds to insure the Center hires and keeps the best program staff.
- Expenses are under Budget and fundraising efforts exceeded budget goals this year. Every dollar over
goal is Board designated and restricted to the Center Building Fund.
- Center employee salaries average 10% less than similar regional not for profit agencies.
Programs & Services: A+
No child or adult is ever turned away from any Center program due his or her inability to pay program fees. Scholarship applications are available at the Center.
- An estimated $72,370 were awarded in scholarships; made possible by successful fundraising and caring
individuals.
- Over 3700 children, teens and adults community residents were served this year
- Center program outcomes were recognized as excellent at a Manatee / United Way County Agency Outcome
Training Meeting.

The Anna Maria Island Community Center was once a one-room school house on the Island.
Island children of the first homesteaders in the early 1900s were educated in classrooms set up in a
variety of locations. By 1913, with 35 homes on the island, it was clear that a school building of
its own was needed if the growing number of children were to be properly served.
G.W. Bean, one of the Island’s early developers, stepped in. He donated two lots on Magnolia Avenue to
the Manatee County School Board. In the fall of 1914 a one-room schoolhouse was built and opened. From then on, scores of dedicated
teachers, working in cramped quarters, brought learning to hundreds of island children.
By the late thirties a second room was added.
G.W. Bean set a precedent for the future - over the years,
whenever a need is there, concerned citizens will address that need with generosity
of spirit....more history |

Currently the Community Center facility serves the island's 8,213 residents, providing cultural, educational, family support, recreational and social programs
to over 1200 youth and 2300 senior adults in our community annually.
90 cents of every dollar raised goes back into our programs with the remaining 10 cents is spent on overhead and administration.
The Center has: 12 full-time staff, 5 part-time staff along with 300 (plus) volunteers.

Community Center facility has:
- 1 Little League Baseball Field
- 2 Soccer Fields
- 1 Gym/large activity room
- 3 Tennis Courts
- 1 Playground
- 1 Counseling area/Family Library
- 1 Classroom/Activity room

Our limited space has forced us to face the following constraints:
- Regulations require separation of teen and youth programs.
- Teens and pre-teens are un-served during high-risk periods.
We can only accommodate
K-5th in after school programs.
- Adults and teens are un-served during days in summer when our
limited facility is used
for K-5th camp programs.
- Our facilities for non-athletic activities are minimal.
- There is a waiting list for programs and people are being
turned away because there
is not enough space.
- 85 % of the children served through our TLC program are on
financial scholarships.

To better serve the community "Give where you live": A Community Campaign for a 21st Century Community Center begins following the
precedent started by G.W. Bean back in 1913 - whenever a need is there, concerned citizens will address that need with generosity of spirit.

Volunteers are the heart of our Community Center; volunteerism is, in fact, our greatest strength.
The Center was established in 1960 by volunteers: teachers, coaches, camp counselors, mentors,
fundraisers and board members. They have made and continue to make a positive difference in our
community every day by providing hope and love through their compassionate leadership.
Volunteers are responsible for keeping quality programs accessible and affordable for everyone.
The Center's motto "Building community through participation and involvement" indicates the Center's objective to increase participation in programs, meet the needs of our community, and build a community base of volunteer leaders.

FAMILY FOUNDATIONS was established in 1993 to provide information and
support to individuals and families during life’s most difficult times. Marriage & Family Therapy,
Parenting Support, Individual and Group Counseling services are available.
More and more individuals and families in our community are living without health insurance and
are hesitant to seek the help when they need it most. Marriage, Family and Individual Therapy,
as well as parenting classes, can be especially beneficial during these stressful times. Anna
Maria Island Community Center provides professional therapy on a sliding fee scale, regardless of insurance, to meet those
needs.
Our two therapists are Shirley Romberger, a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and
Rosemarie Fisher, a licensed Clinical Social Worker. They are able to provide both daytime and
evening hours to make it as convenient as possible for those who are working. Counseling services
are available for children, adolescents, adults, couples and families. Our therapists are also
familiar with Manatee County resources and can make referrals for additional services.
Support groups are also available for parents, caregivers and widowed persons. Life skills groups
for youth and adolescents are also provided to our youth programs.
For more information, or to schedule an appointment call 778-1908.
