Two Million Hours of Service: 105 different adult programs provided life enriching cultural, educational, family support, recreational and social opportunities for over 2,500 adults and seniors last year. Monthly special events and dances throughout the year enrich the Island’s cultural activities. For individuals interested in improving their health or their mind, exploring their talents and developing new skills, there are classes in Art Exhibits, Bridge, Crafts, Drawing, Family Support Groups, German, Interior Design, Irish Dancing, Jazz, Karate, Line Dancing, Pilates, Sewing Group, Tai-Chi, Tennis, Watercolor, Writing, Yoga and much more! New program ideas and instructors are always welcome.

Adult Programs

The Island Community Center's Hagen Tennis Courts offer three all-weather tennis courts, available for use by membership or with the purchase of a day pass. Everyone is invited to participate in our adult round-robin from 7:30am to 11:30am Monday through Saturday.

Adult Programs

Quick N Healthy Cooking for Families
Join popular chef Ellen Jaffe Jones, aka The Veg Coach, for 90 minutes of learning to love and adore your fruits and veggies. These classes were inspired by the huge childhood diabetes and obesity epidemic. Some children have never seen a vegetable, let alone tasted one. Ellen whips up some fabulous dishes that will make you say, “I can’t believe it’s healthy!” Includes recipes, shopping lists, resources, coupons and all the questions you can ask. Lunch will be served to all attendees, but because supplies are purchased ahead of time, registration and payment for the 8 classes must be paid in advance and in full in order to eat. MUST PRE-REGISTER!! Limited space available, need a minimum of 10.

The Cancer Project "Food for Life"
The goal of this program is to empower cancer survivors, their friends, and their family members with easy-to-implement cooking skills that turn every meal into a delicious dose of healthy nutrition. You’ll learn to take advantage of the healing power of foods. Instructor, Ellen Jones, is the only person in her family who hasn’t had cancer, heart disease or diabetes. She has much to share with what has worked so well for her. A former Emmy award winning TV investigative reporter and anchor, the search for staying healthy has been the investigative project of her life. A role model for the fit over 50 and raising healthy children, each lunch will be packed with good food, fun and humor.
Topics include: Fueling Up on Low-Fat Foods, Favoring Fiber, Discovering Dairy Alternatives, Replacing Meat, Planning Healthy Meals, Antioxidants & Phytochemicals, Immune-Boosting Foods and Maintaining a Healthy Weight. The Center offers this FREE class that includes lunch! Pre-registration is a MUST!! Space is limited to 30 people, with a minimum of 10.

Mo’s Mixed Movements
What if you could exercise to salsa music, classical themes and show tunes – and have FUN while toning up? Interested? Then this is the class for you! After a recent class a participant said, "Wow, what a class!! You can really get up a total sweat, but you do not feel like you are doing AEROBICS..Mo, motivates and leads with suggestions of movements, but you can do your own thing whenever you want. She wont let you stop moving though !!. IT IS REALLY FUN AND A REAL WORKOUT! I do not know why I hesitated to come for so long ?"

Sit and Be Fit
This weight bearing exercise class uses free weights, rubber tubing and other strength building equipment. The focus is on slow, controlled moves using proper form for maximum benefit and minimum risk of injury. Everyone works at their own level. Improve bone density, help prevent osteoporosis, improve muscle strength and endurance…helps you look and feel better! It’s never too late to start exercising!

Learn “ceili” dance, which, in Gaelic, means “party” or “good time” Tempo ranges from slow-moving waltzes to rather active reels. Partners are not required. Having FUN is required!

Line Dancing with Bunny
Learn to dance without a partner to country music and have fun and exercise at the same time! Beginners to advanced dancers are welcome.

Pickleball on Monday
Pickleball is the latest CRAZE on the island - a fun and energetic sport for all ages! It’s a combination of Ping-Pong, tennis, and badminton and has been enjoyed for over 20 years by people all over the country. This mini-tennis game is played by 2 or 4 people on a badminton-sized court using wood paddle racquets and a plastic, poly baseball with holes.

Hands-On Basic Spanish
This program provides the beginning level student with the most important vocabulary, grammar and functional expressions needed to communicate in essential situations. This is achieved through a variety of dynamic, interactive verbal exercises and activities that develop student listening, speaking, reading and basic skills. MUST PRE-REGISTER! Bridge Lessons
The addictive game of bridge fascinates challenges and entertains millions of players! Designed for new players, the class starts with basics and works on improving skills. Scrap Happy
Scrap booking is the fastest growing craft industry in the United States. It’s the practice of combining photographs, memorabilia, and written narratives, poetry, quotations, stories, or other textual content into a scrapbook style album. Personal scrapbooks provide a unique view into the thoughts, lives, and activities of their creator(s). In each class, you’ll create a 2-page layout using some photos of your summer vacation. All you need to do is pre-register, bring some of your very own photos and come prepared to have lots of FUN! MUST PRE-REGISTER!
Day and time: 3rd Monday each month starting September 17th 6:30pm-8:30pm.

Digital Photography 101
That new digital camera is often scary until you learn that it can take much better pictures than your old film camera. And the photos are just as easy to shoot. In this class, a lifetime photographer will explain and make digital photography even more fun than film. This class is designed for beginners who want to learn the capabilities of their camera, and what to do with the pictures they shoot.

Computers 101
Lots of people have computers sitting in a closet, because they don’t know how to use them. This class is for beginners who’d like to learn the basics. Especially how to use e-mail and the Internet. Instructor Clarence Jones bought his first computer 23 years ago and quickly fell in love with what it could do to make his life easier and more productive. Just about everything in his business and personal life is computerized. Last year, he even built new computers for his wife and himself. It was fun, so he wrote a book – “Build Your Next PC” – showing others how to do it. He teaches friends how to buy and use computers, and helps them when they get stuck. He’ll do the same for you. When it comes to computers, he says, “There are no stupid questions.” (Pre-registration required)

Selling on E-Bay Learn how to optimize your chances of making money through selling on eBay. Learn how to create attractive listings, set pricing, use PayPal, monitor sales and avoid common money-costing mistakes. EVERYONE has something at home they would like to sell or know a little bit more about... this class will also give you the ability to enhance your knowledge of collectibles and other items.

Photo Shop Elements
This is a follow-up to Digital Photography 101 and Computers 101, to teach you how to go beyond simply printing and/or e-mailing the digital photos you shoot. Virtually every photograph can be improved with a little cropping, a little sharpening, and by tweaking its brightness and contrast. Even poor photographs can be rescued with today’s computer programs. Instructor Clarence Jones, who knows both digital photography and computers, will help you make the connection so your best photos can sparkle. Getting ooohs and aaahs is not that difficult. The class will also explore converting to digital your old photos shot on film, and new ways to display your pictures. Like on your TV screen, a photo sharing website, or a digital photo frame.

Beading Class
There’s a BEADING FRENZY going on around the country! Local crafter and beading instructor, Chloe of Chloe’s Bead Shop, will hold a series of beading classes at the Center beginning September 15th. While teaching the basics of color theory and the use of color in beading, she will teach you how to use color schemes, how to balance and distribute color, shade, tint and how all of this applies to the actual beads used. Recommend pre-registration as space is limited to 13.

Get together with your gal-pals for a FUN and creative evening out! Creative Floral Arranging
Featured in May’s issue of the SRQ Magazine, Silvia Zadarosni likes to shake thing up. “A lot of people only mix tropicals with tropicals. I say “who’s policing your ideas?’ It’s all about colors and textures.” Zadarosni enjoys adding unique flowers you don’t see every day into her arrangements. She also likes to throw in unexpected twists like fresh rosemary, eucalyptus and even small pineapples! She will have the class bring items from their houses or backyards to use in their arrangements. The class will be creative, informative and FUN! She wants us to “think outside the box”.

Watercolor Class- Advanced
Local artist and instructor, Sue Lynn Cotton, teaches an advanced class in watercolor techniques. If you’ve had previous experience it watercolor and desire to fine-tune your craft, here’s your opportunity. Express yourself through painting; Sue Lynn will help bring out the “Artist” in you! Recommend pre-registration as space is limited.

Watercolor Class- Beginners
Local artist and instructor, Sue Lynn Cotton, teaches color mixing on the paper to enhance the color excitement of each subject and works with a limited palette. Her goal is to entertain the viewer with light and color dancing through each painting while expressing the personality of the person or place that she is painting. Recommend pre-registration as space is limited.

One Stroke Painting

Basics of Interior Design
Local designer Bettina Sego, of “Bettina Sego Interiors” will teach you how to achieve the design basics function, mood, harmony and color scheme, as well as how to draw a floor plan. Silk Scarf Painting
The technique of painting on a silk scarf creates such a wonderful and unusually beautiful result! And best of all, it’s wearable art! Take home a potential heirloom; make that special gift for someone who’s dear to you. Recommend pre-registration as space is limited.

Instructor: Barbara Hines, has been painting in different mediums for years and recently discovered the art of silk painting. She has sold many of her creations and wants to share her new craft with others.

Garden Stepping Stones
Do you have a garden that needs some PIZZAZZ? Join local artist, Glen LeFevre, to create a beautiful, decorative cut glass stepping stone. Glen will hold a 2-session Garden Stepping Stone Class every month of the season. He will instruct the class in cutting and grinding the glass, along with grouting and polishing. Each month features a different design. Only have room for 10 students, so enroll NOW to guarantee your spot.

Widowed Persons Support Group
The Manatee Widowed Persons Program offers a support group for widows and widowers. You don’t have to go it alone. Volunteers have been widowed and know what it’s like. They’re trained in how to be supportive abut not intrusive. Join this group for an hour of “Coffee and Conversation”. All widows and widowers are welcome to partake in fellowship.
Day: The 2nd and 4th Mondays of each month from October 22nd - April 21st

Duplicate Bridge Group
