Anna Maria Island Community Center

REACH PROGRAM

Due to many factors, including single-parent households and parents working in the service industry, many of the island teens are without adult companionship for extended periods of time. If a teen does have supervision at home, often her friend will not, and it is therefore easy to find an unsupervised home to spend time in.

The age group serviced by the AMICC Teen Program, 11 to 17 years, is most at risk to experiment with negative high-risk behaviors such as drug use, alcohol abuse, tobacco, and early sexual experience as well as destructive behaviors such as vandalism.

In response, the AMICC Teen Program offers teens a place in society, giving them options, and increasing responsibility while holding them accountable for their actions. AMICC gives youth a vision of their future in order to help them make good choices in their present.

The program provides opportunities for youth to create, plan, and implement programs, and to design and develop projects and special events that will be of benefit to their peers, the community, and to themselves as individuals. Through recreational, educational, social, empowerment-based, and career exploration activities, teens can explore careers and discover ways to make important personal developments. Teens participating in these programs are encouraged to take an interest in their personal growth and development, and to realize their potential leadership ability and role as responsible young adults.
